Transporting goods is no problem in a modern industrial society. Shipping agents and trucking companies everywhere are ready and waiting to undertake deliveries of freight of all kinds quickly and cheaply. This is, of course, dependent on the presence of an efficient infrastructure, and a motorway connection close to the customer. But not every customer has this — some do not even have a dirt track leading to their door.

In cases of this kind, it is not uncommon for a group of fully-laden all-terrain trucks to set off from Speyer in the direction of Frankfurt airport, to disappear on arrival into the hold of a chartered heavy-duty freight aircraft and take off, generally for an exotic destination. No matter whether the task is to deliver a few tonnes of powdered milk to Taklamakan, close to the Chinese border, to supply civil-war refugees in Burundi with fresh drinking water, or to collect motorcycles which have been pounded to scrap on the Paris-Dakar rally — the Würth customer Scout-Logic is always on hand to solve the problem.

Its clients include the German Association for Technical Assistance (GTZ), an arm of the German Foreign Office, the Red Cross, and the organizers of the Paris-Dakar rally, for whom Scout-Logic is an official logistics partner. For this purpose, the company’s Speyer headquarters maintains a permanent staff of 10, backed by a pool of up to 150 freelance workers who can be called on as required.

Logistics, particularly in disaster-relief projects, is however only one of the strengths of this company, founded by Hans-Dieter Schwing and originally located in Mosbach, Baden. The second string to Scout-Logic’s bow is a driving school at Würth customer service.

without Scout-Logic, the helicopter teams of the Paris-Dakar rally organizers would soon be stranded with empty fuel tanks.

It is possible to acquire a heavy-goods-vehicle license after 8 days’ instruction. The company also organizes driving courses under tough off-road conditions, which are very popular as an incentive award for both customers and company staff and can involve flights into the Sahara desert. These courses are, however, not run simply for fun. Professional drivers, too, can learn from ScoutLogic how to drive off-road while minimizing damage to vehicles and terrain.

Finally, the company’s range of services is completed by its presentation division, which accepts commissions from car and truck manufacturers. It was only to be expected that the latest idea of Hans-Dieter Schwing and his team would also be unconventional — to drive from Siberia to Alaska across the Bering Strait, which is frozen over for only three weeks of the year. An unusual way to get to America, but the only real way to go for true Scouts.
